Dark Dancer is a dance piece for video. Two bodies move through space and in and out of a beam of light. Patterns of predictability are challenged – the next location, the next gesture. Genders blur.
The video is dynamically produced when it is inserted in a DVD player – each movement is a short clip, and the custom scripting randomly selects and plays clips in an infinite sequence. The dance is, therefore, truly unpredictable: the machine is choreographer, the dancers are its puppets.
This video is a composite of 100 randomly chosen clips, and simulates the experience of the DVD.
Dark Dancer debuted at ZAAT Media Festival, Lisbon, September 2010.
