London Bananas – Gallery Installation

January 2009
Austin Gallery, London

Over 18 months in 2008-2009 I took pictures of every banana I saw in London’s urban landscape. (You can read more about this project on this page.) In January 2009 I had a show at Austin Gallery in Shoreditch, where I installed 1000 photos from the archives.

On the two larges walls I tiled the images in an onslaught of banana and London imagery. The photos were of four sizes.

On the other wall, painted yellow, I installed series and groups of photos that I had assembled by sorting through the archive. I spent the month before sorting photos into endless groups until patterns began to emerge – patterns of colour, texture, location, time lapse, weather pattern, and so on. These groups provided a new dimension to the work, which before had just been a large archive of single images.
