Sketchbook
It’s taken me years to love my sketchbook.
I have never been very good at drawing; I hated it in art school and never found the joy in it. A few years ago I met some artists and designers who loved to draw and found it as essential a part of their practice as anything else. It was from them that I learned how to draw not to represent the subject, but instead to understand it.
Although I draw schematics for installations and experiments all the time now, I really don’t draw much from life or just makeĀ collages for the fun and the practice. So, I’ve been conducting some experiments with journalling via shape and image – I spent three years writing 1000 words a day and plenty came out of that, so I’ve been wondering what would come out of a collage or drawing a day. I’ve discovered lots of things, namely that just because you *don’t* draw doesn’t mean you *can’t* draw.
